Lovefeast services have their origin in early Christian fellowship or “agape” meals and in an impromptu meal after worship on August 13, 1727 in Berthelsdorf, Germany. Wanting to encourage members of the Moravian community to stay and talk after worship, Count Zinzendorf sent down food from his kitchen and a new tradition of eating together in worship was begun. Lovefeast services at Central today may or may not include a sermon but they always include singing and something to eat and drink, a sweet bun or cookie and coffee or juice. While our sacristans serve this simple meal, we sing hymns especially chosen to convey the message for the day. While we eat, we enjoy conversation or special choir or instrumental music.
