Awakened Hearts: A Wisdom Way of Knowing Prayer Circle

We are offering an opportunity to gather in prayer to deepen our “knowing” God’s Presence in our lives. This circle, Awakened Hearts, led by The Rev. Maggie Wellert, meets in Zinzendorf Parlor on Tuesdays, Jan 28, Feb 25, Mar 25, Apr 28, May 26 from 10 – 11:30 a.m.

We Moravians speak of a “theology of the heart.” By this, we mean there are ways of “knowing” God other than only with head knowledge, our cognitive intellect! We know with our hearts.

Reflecting on Count Zinzendorf’s theology, Bishop Art Freeman wrote, “Religion is known by the heart, rather than the head. The head represented the growing role of human judgment, reason and historical criticism, in examining religious truth. He argues that the head cannot figure it all out. The role and experience of the heart has nothing to do with emotionality or feeling. To know by the heart was regarded as objective perception, just as the five senses experience objective reality…God has provided us with this other way of knowing what we cannot grasp by our intellect.”

Some twenty-first century Christians refer to this as a “wisdom way of knowing,” being alert to what we know with head and heart and in our senses (our body). Through ancient Christian spiritual practices of wisdom-body prayer, chanting, holy reading, and centering prayer-we wake up to this deeper knowing. We know not more, says The Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, but we know with more of us.
