DESCRIPTION:Art Enriching Our Lives \nPlease join us on Sunday\, May 21 at 6:30pm\, for a special evening of art\, art appreciation and spiritual insight. Two of our local artists\, Gene Allen and David Sommers will share presentations\, and we will have a time of fellowship and food as we view their art\, and art shared by art class members. Works of the artists will be available for purchase. We will meet in the lower level of the CE Building. \nGene shares that he was trained and worked as an art teacher and that upon retirement\, he has been focusing on his own art\, and teaching seniors. Many Central members have enjoyed his classes. Nature is the emphasis of his painting. His focus is disappearing landscape\, which has been disappearing too rapidly\, causing drastic changes in the landscape he loves. \nDavid states\, “In Scripture\, imagery and symbols are used to help us understand something beyond our grasp. Likewise\, I will speak about how visual art can further our understanding of Scripture and deepen our grasp of God’s presence in our lives . In particular\, I will share a few paintings that I have presented to Latin American Moravians at various conferences\, and show how to explore a work of art with a series of probing questions\, and thereby help us to participate in the particular Biblical story that the artwork represents.” \nA donation ($10 suggested) will be collected at the door. His topic is “Spirituality as A Source of Meaning and an Instrument for Healing.” His presentation will introduce the Cloud of Unknowing\, contemplative prayer\, the meaning of healing. \nMarch 8\, 15\, and 22 we will have various presenters\, including Pastor Maggie Wellert. We will move into the meaning of Lent\, the significance of prayer as part of our Lenten devotion\, and share in some older prayer practices. \nWe will experience the practice of contemplative prayer\, as introduced by Brother Micah\, and share in devotional ways of engaging with Scripture readings\, either individually or in small groups. This will include guided imagery—imagining yourself in a story\, and what you learn from that experience. \nWe will also work with an African Bible Study method from the Anglican Church\, a variation of the monastery practice of “lectio divina\,” holy reading. \nOn the last evening of the series\, March 29\, after we break bread together\, we will close our time with a Contemplative Worship in the Old Chapel. DESCRIPTION:Create Deep in Me – Midweek Lent 2023 \nPsalm 51 is traditionally read as part of Ash Wednesday Worship\, the beginning of Lent. In the Common English Bible\, verse 10 reads\, “Create a clean heart for me\, God; put a new\, faithful spirit deep inside me!” These words serve as the anchor for our Midweek Lenten series\, “Create Deep in Me.” \nOn Ash Wednesday\, February 22nd\, we will begin our Lenten time together\, by sharing a meal at 6:00 p.m. At 7:00 we will move to the Old Chapel to join in a traditional Ash Wednesday worship\, including imposition of ashes. \nWednesday\, March 1\, after dinner\, Dr. Micah Sadigh will share his thoughts in a presentation entitled\, “Spirituality as a Source of Meaning and an Instrument for Healing.” He will briefly explore contemplative prayer through the lens of The Cloud of Unknowing and its mode of “falling in love with God.” \nThe following three Wednesdays\, March 8th\, 15th\, and 22nd\, we will share in a variety of spiritual practices to “put a new\, faithful spirit deep inside me.” These practices have been used in the church and Christian communities for centuries. \nAfter our shared meal on March 29th we will bring our Lenten series to a close with a contemplative worship service in the Old Chapel\, designed around the practices we’ve learned\, designed to lead us into Holy Week. \nPastor Maggie Wellert\, Jane Leposa \, and Pam Larimer are coordinating this ministry. DESCRIPTION:Perhaps you have heard a rumor about the painting classes last Spring in the C.E. building\, lower level and the good time had by all. Why not come and try your hand and join us?  Classes begin Oct. 3 and meet once a week from 10 a.m.-12p.m.\, until Nov. 7. All you need to bring is a photograph (preferably your own) of something you would like to paint\, a roll of paper towels\, and your desire to paint. No experience necessary! The first will be on Wednesday evening\, September 28th from 7-8:30 p.m.\, in Hybrid format and live at the C. E. building. A link will be sent to people who register. Additional information will be provided after Labor Day through a Mission Moment\, along with The Sunday Times and Constant Contact. \nThe following is an outline by Dr Sadigh for his first presentation: Anxiety\, Uncertainty\, and Human Existence: From Symptom Management to Creativity\, Micah Sadigh\, Professor of Psychology\, Cedar Crest College. \nAnxiety\, defined as fear of the unknown\, is a fundamental aspect of human existence. It emerges from and is woven into the fabric of what makes us self-conscious beings. Although its symptoms can be ameliorated or even subdued temporarily\, anxiety will remain a part of our orientation toward possibilities. Such possibilities can potentially overwhelm and cripple us\, or they can offer us solutions to our existing problems through innovative means. In this talk\, we will explore the many dimensions of anxiety and how a sense of identity and meaning play a critical role in transforming it into a source of creativity\, which can ultimately contribute to the betterment of humanity. \nThe second of this series will be Wednesday evening\, October 26th\, same time\, same place\, same format. The content of the second presentation will be determined in part by feedback and questions generated from the first presentation.\nWe very much look forward to hearing Micah’s discussion about how we have dealt with and will continually deal with anxiety during these very difficult times.
