DESCRIPTION:The Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch – Guest Preacher & Lectures\nWhen it comes to race and racism\, Moravians have our own stories of villains and heroes\, complacency and prophecy\, complicity and resistance. Moravian archival records\, both North and South\, reveal a long-term insider view of the actions and decisions of church leaders\, congregations\, agencies\, and Synods. Some of these have lain dormant\, without public discussion\, for decades or centuries. We’ll explore some of the lowlights and highlights of what Moravians have done––for worse and for better––with respect to slavery\, segregation\, and discrimination. These sometimes sobering\, sometimes inspiring stories offer both a lens and a mirror\, as we look at “them” then and ourselves now. The Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch will be our guest preacher on June 1st and will present his two-part lecture series on Wednesday\, June 4 and Wednesday\, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the Christian Education building\, lower level. SUMMARY:Parents Confirmation Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What is Confirmation in the Moravian Church? \nConfirmation is a rite by which persons baptized as children publicly affirm the covenant made for them in baptism and confirm their faith. Confirmation is a personal decision\, made by the young person\, to take the next step in their faith journey and involvement with the church\, but it is not made only as an individual. We are a church community also publicly recognize and affirm this young person and continue to support them along their lives’ journeys. Maybe now more than ever\, it is vital for our young people to know that they are loved by God and a community outside of their immediate family. This faith community will celebrate with them over their successes but also hold them through challenges as they grow into adulthood. We see this as we celebrate with our graduates in June\, welcome young people back as young adults in more leadership roles and bless marriages and families. \nTwo opportunities for next year: \nA regular year-long confirmation class will be held. All youth ages 12 -16 are eligible for this class. Ideally\, confirmation will be for 8th and 9th graders\, but if there are siblings in 7th\, we will allow them to join as well. Before the craziness of summer\, we’ll hold a parents’ meeting after worship on Sunday\, June 1st (approximately 11:15 a.m.) in the Kleiner Saal (2nd floor of the sanctuary\, East end). We’ll review a potential calendar\, talk about best days/times for confirmation class\, expectations for confirmation etc. \nThe Confirmation year will start in late August\, with approximately 2 gatherings each month\, one for learning more about our faith stories\, Bible\, and Moravian Church history and one to explore the ways that Central serves in our church and greater community. This will often include field trips to do community service\, explore other faith communities (synagogues\, mosques and churches)\, and more. Pastor Janel will be leading next year’s confirmation class. If the young person chooses\, they will be confirmed in the late spring of 2026. \nA second option for joining the church: We realize that some of our senior highs and early college students\, due to COVID and other obstacles in the regular time when they would normally been confirmed\, did not have the chance to become an adult member of the church. Pastor Janel will offer a virtual inquirers’ class for anyone not able to be in our regular confirmation class who is a senior in high school or in the their college/early 20’s but did not go through confirmation. This will be taking form in monthly Zoom gatherings starting in September. Communication to those eligible will go out over the summer or contact Pastor Janel for more information.
