About the series: This year the History committee recommended that the mid-week Lenten series should focus upon some of the rich historical aspects of our church both in the past as well as some aspects of its unfolding history.
We had identified individuals who are recognized experts in several disciplines and we have asked them to introduce our congregation to a variety of topics which are fresh and informative.
As Central Moravian Church commemorated the 200th anniversary of the construction of our church building, it was recognized that we had no specific architectural drawings of the structure. Jeff Long, an architectural expert and member of Central Church was engaged to develop a detailed rendering of the entire building. His drawings are spectacular. This extensive collection will be viewed on two Wednesdays, February 13 and 20 at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. After Jeff presents the drawings there will be guided tours of the church to observe areas he has described.
On February 27, Paul Peucker, the Archivist of the Moravian Church, Northern Province, member of Central and an Elder, will give a presentation on “What Is the Bethlehem Diary?”
Patricia McAndrew is a historian and a Fulbright Scholar who has been a life long resident of Bethlehem. As a graduate of Moravian College where she majored in history, she has concentrated on such local figures as Stephen Vincent Benet and recently published a book entitled “Bethlehem Boy” which focuses upon the letters and diary of Central member James A. Peifer who was in the infantry during the Civil War. Pat will give a presentation on March 5 at 7 p.m in The Old Chapel.Ab
On March 12, at 7 p.m. in The Old Chapel, Charlene Donchez Mowers, the Executive Director of the Historic Bethlehem Partnership and Jim Whildin, the President of Historic Bethlehem Partnership and highly respected architect will team up to focus upon “The Christiansfeld Initiative.” Both have attended international conferences with representatives from other Moravian communities in an effort to gain national and worldwide recognition through UNESCO.
Lenten Sunday: Feb. 10th, 10 a.m.: The Egg and the Season of Lent
Begin the season of Lent through a special all-church school Lenten Workshop. All ages are welcome on Sunday, February 10th during the 10 a.m. church school hour to learn more about the 40 days of Lent through lessons, music and crafts. Thinking about the Easter message of eggs and rebirth, we will start a Lenten collection of change to buy chickens for needy families in the world through Church World Service. Ask Pastor Janel for a container to collect money all through Lent - let's see how many chickens we can buy!!
