Holy Communion

The Moravian Church practices open communion, which means that members of all Christian Churches are invited to share the bread and the cup of Holy Communion. The form in which the Holy Communion is administered in the Moravian Church differs from that of other churches, for it is based upon practices which began in our church in the 15th century.

The bread and the cup are brought to the pews by one of the pastors, symbolically reminding us of God's initiative through Christ, in coming to each one of us. Those who desire to receive Communion simply stand with the others in their group when the pastor approaches. Those who choose not to partake may remain seated. After the group has been served, everyone sits and continues singing until all have been served. Then the pastor, using words of Scripture, will invite everyone to stand and partake together. At the beginning and again at the close of the service of Holy Communion, everyone shares the "right hand of fellowship" with those standing nearby.  The first time signifies our "oneness in Christ," the second "renewed dedication and unity of purpose in the service of Christ."

Baptized children who have received instruction are also invited to partake of Holy Communion in the Moravian Church. We suggest that you talk with your child about Holy Communion and partaking in the service beforehand, and please consider scheduling a conversation with you, your child and one of the pastors to help your child explore the meaning behind communion. If your child is to receive the elements, he or she may stand with others in your group as the pastor comes to the pew; non-partaking children should remain seated.
